This study draws parallels between the open source movement and two different and important organizational forms, social movements and firms. It examines the consequences of the entry and participation by firms in the open source community, and the resulting intermingling of seperate incentive systems characteristic of social movements with those of firms. It makes an analytical distinction between the contructs of participation and involvement, and suggests that the firms' sponsorship of open source projects will have different implications for community participation and involvement in firm-sponsored open source projects.
