The project aims to analyze which institutional and cultural factors are in favor of free/libre/open source software (FLOSS) development. Therefore, we would like to extract from the SourceForge.net Research Data information regarding the geographical origin of FLOSS developers (see Robles et al. 2006 for the approach). Based on this, we want to analyze in a cross-country study how the number of FLOSS developers per inhabitants of a country is shaped by institutional and cultural factors. We take into account factors like the legal system (protection of property rights), social capital (interpersonal trust and civic engagement), the degree of individualism, level of education, etc. The project is a sub-project of the research project: "An Institutional Economic Analysis of Open Source and Closed Source Software".
