A gap appears to be in the current open source software (OSS) literature where the focus has been on the development with little or no attention as to its maintenance. OSS applications present new opportunities and challenges for the project managers who need to know how their decisions can improve quality and control maintenance for their systems. We propose a new model studying the effects of OSS popularity, volatility, and structure on software quality and maintenance.
